Training Band

This page which will give you details about the Training Band and hopefully give you an insight into what actually goes on.

We would like to make you aware, if not known already, that our Training Band exists to train new players from the point of being a complete beginner through to joining the Main Band.  The wording of the Band’s constitution reads:

“The Training Band is a sub-section of the Band, created by the Band for the development of players to the Main Band.  The Training Band is run at the discretion of the Committee and progression of learners to the Main Band is at the discretion of the Musical Director.”

The natural progression of Bratton Silver Band has always been:

1. A beginners group to teach absolute beginners the rudiments of music and playing a brass instrument.
2. A training group for novices to learn, with their peers, how to play in a brass group and to introduce them to simple to medium difficulty brass band pieces.
3. For those ‘trainees’ who are progressing well to join the first hour of the Main Band practice on Monday evenings from 8 – 9 pm.  The purpose of this hour is to start the integration of Training Band players into the Main Band – to play the simpler (fete type) music and learn to play as part of a larger group and with different age groups.

The next steps are to play ‘out’ with the Main Band at Summer Fetes etc. and progress to Friday night practices and eventual assimilation into the Main Band.

Within the Training Band training group there are members that hold first aid certificates (to the level of Appointed Person) and also those who have been CRB checked specifically for our organisation. We also have a child protection policy which is available to view upon request.
